SEIU files suit against Pennsylvania and its governor
The SEIU, along with certain state legislators filed suit against the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and its governor, seeking a declaratory judgment that the governor’s plan to close 26 state health centers and furlough nurses was unlawful.
According to SEIU’s complaint, the union represents about 25,000 health care employees in Pennsylvania, including certain nurses who work for the Commonwealth itself. The defendants allegedly lack the statutory authority to close the state health centers or to reduce the health services provided by those centers. Claiming the potential for irreparable harm in the absence of equitable relief, the union requested a preliminary and permanent injunction preventing the defendants from closing the health centers.
